Toolbar
Â
The Toolbar has numerous functions that can be used to explore the canopy study data. This section will describe each one as they relate to the user experience.Â
Layers:
Â
The layers tool has other data layers that can be viewed within the application. This panel has a toggle to turn on labels for the selected Layer of the Content Panel (Observe, Prioritize, or Plant) dropdown list. Other data layers will include land cover, tree inventory data, and potential planting opportunities. The data layer list will depend on the project scope and how much data is available. The user can also adjust the opacity of each layer so that it can be viewed over a basemap image.
Â
The layers in this list can also be moved up or down by left-clicking on the layer name, holding the mouse, and adjusting it up or down in the list. The layers in this window are the drawing order with the top layers being shown first.Â
Filter:
Â
The Filter tool works to reduce the number of features in the Map Frame by selecting a specific range of data. Move the slider to specify the range.Â
Â
The user can select from two filters for Current Canopy Percent and Possible Canopy Percent (amount of available planting space). If a change assessment has been completed, a user can also filter by the amount of change that was observed.Â
Â
Click the Reset button to reset all filters back to default.
Â
Vacant Site Query:
Â
The Vacant Site query tool will allow users to select a single or group of vacant planting locations. Vacant sites must exist for this tool to work.Â
Â
Users can draw a polygon or rectangle for the selection by clicking on the button they wish to use. Users can then draw an area of interest around the features they would like to select by left-clicking the mouse to drop vertices on the map. Double left click to finish drawing the polygon Selected records will display in the Results Table at the bottom of the screen. Once selected, records can be exported for further analysis. You can use the Clear Query button to unselect the selected features.
Â
Layer Query:
Â
The Layer Query tool works similarly to the Vacant Site tool in that users select data based on a drawn polygon or rectangle. After the Draw Select, the user will be able to Select Data Fields to display in a Data Summary and Chart.Â
Â
The Data Summary section will aggregate the information from all selected features.Â
Â
The Chart will show the percentages of current tree canopy, possible tree canopy, and other cover types.Â
Â
For users wishing to see only the selected features, click Advanced Query. This will limit all analysis to the selected features. To reset or clear the selection, click Clear Query.
Â
Â
Species Diversity:
Â
The Species Diversity tool will give users a unique experience when tree inventory and species data is available. When using this tool, a user will move the circular tool in the Map Frame to their vacant site location that they wish to plant (black circles). When the tool hovers over this location, a report is created from the tree inventory data. This produces a table of information that has an analysis of tree count, species richness, a pie chart of the species distribution, relative, density, relative frequency, relative abundance, and importance value index.
Â
A common use for this tool would be to help decision-making when planting a new tree. The search radius tool will allow the user to analyze species distribution at various levels such as street/block, neighborhood, or community wide. Through this assessment, better decisions can be made to avoid over planting certain species.

Â
Quick Benefits Calculator:
Â
The Quick Benefits Calculator allows users to estimate future benefits of trees. To use this calculator, enter the number of trees and adjust the sliders to desired levels.Â
Â
Click the Calculate button, to display the benefits in the panel to the right.Â
Â
More information on the calculator inputs can be found in the Plant tab documentation.Â
*Benefits are annual, not cumulative!
Â
Print:
The Print function allows the user to take a quick screen capture of the information in the Map Frame. While formatting isn’t available, the user can print the screen capture or edit the image in another program to highlight details or make notes.
